Tessa Casanova is a South Texas native who has now made her home in Ames, Iowa. She came to work as a temp through Advance Services Inc. in September 2019 and has now been hired by the Iowa State University Seed Lab at the Seed Science Center, in the Purity Lab and Seed Health Lab. Seed Trait Lab coordinator, Tyler Tunning, first came to the Seed Science Center as a student in the DNA lab during his senior year at Iowa State University, in 2012. A couple years later he returned and eventually became a full-time employee, in 2015. He is currently the only Registered Genetic Technologist (RGT) on staff. The Iowa State University Seed Science Center (ISU SSC) is saddened to report the passing of seed industry pioneer and friend, Dr. Owen J. Newlin. Newlin received a B.S. in Agronomy and a M.S. in Crop Production from Iowa State University, where he met and married his wife, Doris Jean. Owen and Doris were married on July 19, 1952. It was November 1979 when Dr. Leroy Everson hired the current Iowa State University Seed Lab Manager, Michael “Mike” Stahr, as a student seed analyst. While Mike’s passion for seeds has now spanned over 40 years, his love of agriculture is his DNA. Mike’s parents both grew up on farms and moved to Iowa when Mike was a young child. Dr. Leroy Everson spent more than 30 years at Iowa State University (ISU) as a seed scientist and served as Director of the Seed Science Center (SSC), until his retirement in 1980. The father of four and former Navy lieutenant commander passed away in 2005, yet his legacy at ISU lives on through the generosity of his children.
For the past seven years John Everson, along with his sisters, Karin Everett, Grace Turley, and Mary Everson, continued funding the seed science scholarship established by their father and the annual seed symposium named in their parents’ honor. Save-the-Date for 2020 Seed Quality WorkshopsAMES, IA – The Iowa State University (ISU) Seed Science Center (SSC) and Iowa Seed Association are accepting applications for 11 scholarships. This year, nine Iowa Seed Association (ISA) scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded along with the $1,000 Bill Latham Memorial Scholarship and the $1,000 Lisa Shepherd Jenkins Memorial Scholarship. Plant Pathology and Microbiology Professor Gary Munkvold was honored Monday, September 23 with the Regents Award for Faculty Excellence. There is a new face at the Iowa State University Seed Science Center (SSC). Bobbie Jo Gustafson joined the staff as an Administrative Specialist II on August 26, 2019. Gustafson, who earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art and Design at ISU in 1997, says she is excited to be back on campus and at the SSC. It is with great sadness the Iowa State University Seed Science Center (ISU-SSC) announces the passing of Dr. Bruce Maunder on Monday, August 5, 2019. Dr. Maunder was a friend and served as Chair to the ISU-SSC advisory council since 1994. He, and his wife Kathy, contributed to the education of many future seed scientists though anonymous donations to various ISU-SSC scholarships.
