The Seed Science Center (SSC) is thrilled to recognize two outstanding team members, Tess Howard (pictured below) and Wendy Borja-Diaz (pictured left), as recipients of the 2025 CYtation Awards. Both honorees have gone above and beyond in their roles, demonstrating leadership, innovation, and unwavering commitment during a year of major transition for the Center.
Tess Howard, Seed Lab Office Manager, has been a transformative force at SSC since her arrival three years ago. One of her most significant accomplishments was the role she played in modernizing the Seed Lab’s operations by transitioning from paper-based systems to a fully digital workflow. This shift has dramatically improved customer service quality and streamlined internal processes across the board.
In the past year, Tess's leadership truly shined as she took on additional responsibilities following the retirement of the Seed Lab Manager and the absence of a permanent SSC director. Stepping into an expanded role, she became the steady presence ensuring operations continued seamlessly. Known as “the glue that holds SSC together,” Tess has shown extraordinary initiative, adaptability, and dedication—qualities that make her an exemplary CYtation Award recipient.
Wendy Borja-Diaz was also honored for her critical contributions as the SSC’s Cost Center Manager (CCM), a role she took on in March 2024 while continuing her responsibilities with CALS Finance. Wendy stepped in during a time of financial uncertainty at SSC and quickly became an essential part of stabilizing the Center’s operations.
With a meticulous and methodical approach, Wendy addressed long-standing financial discrepancies, ensured compliance with university policies, and supported program leaders with clarity and patience. Her financial expertise and dedication have brought order and transparency to SSC’s fiscal operations—benefiting every team member across the Center.
Tess and Wendy exemplify what it means to lead through service and commitment. Their work has not only improved day-to-day operations but also laid a foundation for long-term success at the Seed Science Center. Please join us in congratulating them on this well-earned recognition!
Thank you, Tess and Wendy, for your remarkable contributions—you make SSC stronger every day.
