Dr. Stephen Smith (Genetic Resources and Maize Evolution Conservation), Universities of London and Birmingham (U.K), is a Visiting Scientist at the ISU Seed Science Center. Smith, (Affiliate Agronomy Professor, ISU), formerly Research Fellow with DuPont Pioneer, serves on national and international intellectual property committees. He was Board member of Bioversity International (CGIAR), the National Council of Commercial Plant Breeders, and on the advisory council of the ISU Bioethics Program. Smith helped secure Pioneer’s intellectual property rights and secured a $1 million contribution to the Global Crop Diversity Trust.
Smith’s research interests include germplasm access and benefit sharing, variety identification, genetic gain, sustainable use of genetic diversity, and intellectual property protection.
