Moellers Named First Lisa Shepherd Jenkins Memorial Scholarship Recipient 

Drew Jenkins shakes hands with Anthony Moellers, first recipient of the Lisa Shepherd Jenkins Memorial ScholarshipThe first recipient of the Lisa Shepherd Jenkins Memorial Scholarship was recognized February 15 during the 2017 Iowa Seed Association (ISA) Scholarship Awards Ceremony. The event was held in conjunction with the Agribusiness Showcase & Conference at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.

ISU Agronomy Senior Anthony Moellers received the award that is open to students engaged in seed science and technology at Iowa State University. The $1,000 scholarship honors Lisa Shepherd Jenkins who was an internationally respected expert in seed pathology. She was Director of the Administrative Unit of the National Seed Health System and Seed Health Testing Coordinator for the ISU Seed Science Center. Lisa passed away in July of 2015. 

Moellers, a senior double-majoring in Agronomy and Seed Science with a minor in Ag Business from West Union, Iowa, has worked in the Seed Science Center germination lab as a student at Iowa State. He plans to work for Mycogen Seeds and Dow AgroSciences following graduation and use his knowledge to recommend to producers seed that will provide a sustainable source of income while protecting the environment.

In 2015, the Seed Science Center, the American Phytopathological Society, and the American Seed Trade Association partnered to establish a fundraising initiative to honor the memory of Shepherd Jenkins. The Scholarship was established and met its $25,000 goal in late 2015. It honors the advances that Shepherd Jenkins made in seed pathology and seed health during her career and to continue her legacy of giving forward to help educate the next generation of seed industry professionals.
